Empowerment in Action: NDIS Support Beyond Immediate Crisis

The complexity of navigating support for escalating behaviours and trauma demands highly strategic expertise. This case study demonstrates the level of professional dedication Steven, our Support Coordinator, brings to every NDIS journey at Plan and Grow.

The case, which occurred earlier in Steven's career, involved a young person with complex needs and profound historical trauma. Steven's intervention began with a letter from the participant's counsellor. Recognising that necessary evidence wasn't enough, he used this letter as the crucial piece of reference to build an intensive, highly-strategic support. Through targeted advocacy, Steven was able to get access to an extra $50,000 in NDIS funding to implement Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) and respite care. This opportunity was a testament to looking beyond the immediate crisis and planning for the participant's stable adult life from the beginning.

The Strategy: Planning for Long-Term Success

Steven's approach to this case was a masterclass in strategic, cross-system advocacy. He saw the systemic failure—non-targeted public health support—and crafted a plan that was both trauma-informed and future-proof:

  1. Connecting complexity and funding: Steven provided the critical evidence needed by strategically linking the participant’s unique support needs to their trauma processing. This clinical connection secured the comprehensive funding required.
  2. Mitigating risk, upholding dignity: Steven strategised for support funding that protected the participant from self-sabotage while also shielding the community from harm. He reframed the support as an essential duty of care to the public, which prevented the need for costly and destructive legal intervention.
  3. The crucial move: He successfully advocated for trained support workers to transport the participant to therapy. This strategic intervention ensured the sessions remained safe, effective, and did not re-traumatise the individual in transit.

The Heart of the Mission: Why Steven Joins Our Team

Steven's relentless determination was driven by a powerful sense of ethical responsibility—a duty of care to ensure every person has a fair go at a positive future. This is the quality of professionalism Plan and Grow invests in.

When asked what personally motivated his advocacy in this case, Steven’s perspective was clear:

"If we fail to help this person and supply them with enough support, we allow a destructive narrative to take hold. We have a duty of care to help them (other people) by helping him today…There is a lot going on and you just have to take it as a holistic approach and you have to not be scared of the information that you're getting.”

This commitment to ethical, empowering support is reflected in the belief Steven lives by:

"Independence looks different for every one."

We are proud that Steven and his expertise are now part of our team, ensuring Plan and Grow continues to set the standard for complex Support Coordination.
